British Tamil Examination Board
Recently a group of official colleagues from Tamil schools in England formed a new organisation called British Tamil Examination Board. http://www.bteb.org.uk. We believe that a non-political national organisation for Tamil is vital to support ongoing development in Tamil language and culture learning for the next generation.
As OCR stopped offering Asset examinations including for Tamil language last year, the group decided to run its own examinations at different levels following the same format as Asset. Our aim is to maintain a system which is flexible, assesses all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) and is similar to assessment in other languages taught in mainstream schools.
We are trialling the new model with papers in reading and writing at ‘basic user’ level this June. This will be followed by tests in speaking and listening at the same level next year.
We are in discussion with national language bodies about gaining formal recognition for the new tests and other community organisations are also seeking recognition.
We will keep in touch with you about further developments and would welcome any comments or suggestions you may have.
